Introducing Helle Siljeholm and the World’s Northernmost Chinatown

With artistic director Luba Kuzovnikova on maternity leave until May 2019, we are pleased to introduce Helle Siljeholm as acting artistic director for the Barents Spektakel next February. Helle is a choreographer, performer and visual artist with an MA in Visual Arts (Oslo National Academy of the Arts) and a BA (Hons) in choreography and dance (London Contemporary Dance School). Helle has a long working relationship with Pikene på Broen having previously co-produced her solo performance ‘Miss Vertigo’ with us, joined us as a residency artist through our BAR International programme, performed during the Barents Spektakel 2013 and been a panellist during one of our most recent Transborder Cafés. We are pleased to work with Helle for the next festival and congratulate Luba and Marius on the arrival of Jasha Kuzovnikov-Johansen this summer!

For the 2019 Barents Spektakel, Kirkenes will transform into the World’s Northernmost Chinatown!

As receding sea ice opens shipping routes to the north, and almost unimaginable levels of global investment revitalise ancient overland trade routes, the time is right to welcome China to Kirkenes and create a future of prosperity and cooperation.

From this day forth, Kirkenes will (re)put itself on the map as the World’s Northernmost Chinatown!
